The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has issued a strongly worded statement citing the government of breaching signed agreements and failing to address their outstanding concerns as promised.
CETAG members are threatening to take further action following these inactions by the government.
The statement, released on October 28th, 2024, highlights the government’s failure to honor their agreements made on July 24th and August 19th, 2024.
These agreements included migrating CETAG members to the public universities’ salary structure by the end of October and paying a one-month basic salary as compensation for their additional work in 2022.

CETAG members, who had previously called off a two-month strike action in August based on assurances from government officials, are now expressing “disappointment and frustration” at the government’s lack of action.
The statement further points to the government’s failure to provide feedback on the outstanding issues despite repeated assurances from the Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, and the Senior Advisor to the Vice President.
“As of today, there has not been any feedback from the Minister for Education, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, and the Senior Advisor to the Vice President regarding their failure to honour their assurances to members of CETAG by addressing the outstanding concerns by the end of October 2024,” the statement reads.
CETAG strongly condemns the government’s inaction, characterizing it as a demonstration of “bad faith and disrespect” toward its members.

The association also criticized the Minister for Education’s previous public statements that accused CETAG leadership of acting in bad faith.
The leadership emphasized that they will no longer rely on empty promises and warns that they will soon announce their next steps to ensure their demands are met.
“In conclusion, we wish to inform the general public that the Association shall no longer sit down for the Government to deliberately short-change its members. For the past two years, the Government has cunningly used series of fruitless meetings with the Association to pretend it was in the process of honouring the NLC’s Compulsory Arbitration Award for CETAG members which has turned out to be a mirage. Based on the foregoing developments, CETAG members have resolved to take our destinies into our hands henceforth as it is now clear that our legitimate demands are not of priority to the Government. We shall soon advise ourselves accordingly very soon as never before,” the statement concluded.
