The Colleges of Education Teachers Association (CETAG) has announced that they have abandoned all negotiations with the government due to what they perceive as a lack of progress in addressing their demands.

CETAG had called off their 8-week strike on August 20th after intervention from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with the promise that their issues would be resolved by the end of October.

However, as of October 28th, the association has revealed that there has been no movement on their demands, leading them to feel disillusioned and disregarded by the government.

“How can you explain to people that we went on strike and the Vice President’s office intervened, promising to resolve the issues? We went on strike and the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations intervened, promising to resolve the issues, pay the money involved, and ensure the migration by October, and as we speak now, nobody is telling anybody anything?” CETAG President, Mr. Prince Obeng-Himang, stated in an interview with Joynews monitored by Coleman Publications on October 28th. “It is clear that our issue cannot be prioritized by them.”

The President asserted that the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) has decided on a course of action that will “shake the very fundamentals of teacher education” in Ghana.

He declined to specify the exact nature of their “advice,” but stated that the government has some few days to address their concerns before facing the consequences.

“We want to thank them and let them know that, now that they have proven they cannot prioritize our welfare, we are going to advise ourselves big time, in such a manner that will shake the very fundamentals of this country and teacher education like never before. ”- Mr. Prince Obeng-Himang posited.

With the Colleges of Education currently scheduled to commence academic activities for the 2024/2025 academic year on November 18th, 2024, the ongoing issue threatens to disrupt the smooth running of teacher education in the country once again.

It is hoped that the government will resolve the situation as soon as possible to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.
