The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has once again demonstrated its handball supremacy, sweeping gold in both the men’s and women’s categories at this year’s Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.
This historic achievement under the unparalleled guidance of Coach Raphael Sifah cements UEW’s position as the undisputed leader in university handball.
For the UEW women’s team, the triumph was more than a victory—it was a legacy. They clinched their 6th GUSA successive gold medal, a streak that defines their unyielding dominance.

The men’s team added their own brilliance, claiming their Third Consecutive championship title, a testament to their rising prominence and resilience.
Men’s Heroic Journey: Turning Moments into Milestones
UEW’s men’s team set the tone for a remarkable campaign with a hard-fought victory against the host university, UCC, winning 26–24 in a clash many dubbed the “battle for the crown.”

A game-changing tactical timeout called by Coach Sifah in the final moments sealed this electrifying win, showcasing his sharp strategic acumen.
Their winning streak continued with commanding performances:
- AMMUSTED: 38–17
- KNUST: 30–18
The turning point of the tournament came against UDS, whose raw power and robust playstyle forced a gripping 33–33 draw.
Despite the challenge, the team rallied to secure a hard-earned 25–23 victory over UG in the final group game, earning them the championship title.
The UEW women’s team was a formidable force, striking fear into their opponents even before stepping onto the court.

Their brilliance left no doubt about their superiority, as demonstrated by their spectacular victories:
- UCC: 37–19
- UDS: 37–22
- UG: 47–20
Such was their reputation that Team KNUST opted not to play their final match, conceding outright to avoid an inevitable defeat. With unmatched precision, flair, and teamwork, the women’s team delivered a masterclass in every game.
In his post-tournament reflections, Coach Raphael Sifah attributed the triumph to relentless hard work, unwavering discipline, and exceptional teamwork. He shared a guiding principle that resonates with his philosophy:
“It’s not just about gold medals; it’s about Jesus. He crowns your efforts with success.”
Coach Sifah’s ability to inspire, strategize, and lead has earned him a reputation as a masterful tactician and motivator.

The success of teams across the competition cannot be attributed to raw talent alone. It was a result of hard work, discipline, and strategic preparation by players and coaches alike.
The synergy between technical teams and athletes played a pivotal role in executing game plans and achieving extraordinary results.
Coaches across the tournament shared a unifying vision: nurturing talents that can elevate Ghanaian handball to the global stage.
The Future of Ghanaian Handball
One of the most exciting outcomes of this year’s GUSA Games is the recognition of several athletes with potential for international success.
Many players displayed the skills and athleticism needed to excel at higher levels, including the upcoming International Handball Federation (IHF) competition.

This marks a significant step forward, as more players are poised to represent Ghana on the global stage, bringing visibility and prestige to the nation.
The exceptional performances at GUSA have also reignited calls for handball to be included in the West Africa University Games (WAUG).
Coaches and stakeholders emphasized that Ghanaian universities have the depth of talent and skill required to compete for gold at the regional level.

Congratulations to the UEW Men’s and Women’s Handball Teams—you have not just won titles; you have etched your names in history as champions, trailblazers, and legends.
