The National Labour Commission has issued a letter calling on three Teacher Unions to immediately end their ongoing nationwide strike.
In a letter dated March 21, 2024, the Chairperson of the Commission, Justice Kwamena Asuman-Adu, notified the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) to reverse their decision to strike.

The letter, titled “RE: IN THE MATTER OF DECLARATION OF NATIONWIDE STRIKE BY THREE TEACHER UNIONS-GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT,” referred to Section 133 (1) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) to emphasize the legal basis for the Commission’s request.
The Commission clarified that the strike declaration on March 20, 2024, did not comply with Section 159 of Act 651, which outlines the required procedures for initiating a strike.
This decision by the National Labour Commission comes in response to the significant disruptions caused by the ongoing strike action in the education sector.
The strike, which was widely announced through various media networks by the Unions, has adversely affected schools across the country, leading to a halt in teaching and learning activities.

While the Teacher Unions have not officially responded to the Commission’s letter, it is expected that they will review the request and consider their next course of action.
The National Labour Commission has made it clear that compliance with this order is essential for the smooth operation of the education sector.
