Brief Background

The Savannah College of Education, located in the Savannah Region of Ghana, was initially established as a private institution.

The college was created to address the educational disparities in the newly formed Savannah Region, which, despite its rich cultural heritage and potential, had a pressing need for a public college of education.

In 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the government of Ghana and the college to facilitate its absorption into the public tertiary education system.

This transition aimed to enhance access to quality teacher education and address disparities in teacher training across the region.

The college’s establishment marked a significant milestone in the region’s history, as it became the first College of Education in the Savannah Region.

The college is dedicated to promoting excellence in education, fostering holistic development, and empowering learners to thrive in all aspects of life.

In March 2025, the Savannah College of Education was officially absorbed into Ghana’s public college system, following the successful fulfilment of all regulatory requirements.

This move was part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen the national educational framework and promote equity in educational opportunities4.

The college now operates under the governance and funding structures of Ghana’s public tertiary education system, which is expected to improve teacher training infrastructure, enhance faculty development, and upgrade curricula to meet modern educational standards.
