Tips for Choosing the Right Programme and Gaining Admission into the College of Education with Ease

The dream of many Senior high school graduate is to gain admission to their desired college of Education.

However, the college admission process has become increasingly competitive in recent years.

The Competitive Landscape of College Admissions:

In the past, Colleges of Education in Ghana were seen as a less competitive option compared to other tertiary institutions.

However, this is no longer the case.

With the introduction of degree-awarding programs, Colleges of Education have become more competitive, and admission requirements have become stricter.

Choosing the Right Program and Course:

When choosing a program and course to apply for, it is important to consider your strengths and interests(Your area of specialization at SHS).

Don’t apply for a program simply because it appears to be easier or because someone else suggested it.

Doing so could result in disqualification, especially if you don’t meet the admission requirements.

Tips for a Successful College Application:

To increase your chances of being accepted into your desired program, there are several things you can do;

Firstly, make sure that all your grades are passing grades, from A1 to C6, as no public College of Education in Ghana accepts D7.

Additionally, you must have at least three credits in both your core subjects and electives.

Furthermore, it is important to apply within your area of study while at SHS.

Avoid the temptation of applying for a programme which is not in your area of study at SHS, as this could result in disqualification.

For instance, if you are a business student who did not offer mathematics as one of your electives at SHS, it is not advisable to apply for any of the JHS programs if the college you are applying to does not offer programmes relating to your remaining electives.

Similarly, if you are a General Arts student who did not pursue Economics or Elective Maths, it is not always wise to choose JHS Education when applying if the college you are applying to does not offer programmes relating to your electives.

Instead, you can apply for Early Grade Education or Upper Primary Education.

However, Technical, Visual Art, and Home Economics students have more flexibility in choosing the JHS programs.

As long as they meet the admission requirements, they are free to apply at the JHS level as that is their domain.
