The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls as part of a strategy to generate revenue for the maintenance of the nation’s road infrastructure.

This initiative, revealed in a press release dated February 6, 2025, aims to address ongoing challenges related to road maintenance funding.

According to the Ministry, a modern, technologically-driven toll collection system is in development.

“We are committed to implementing a system that is not only efficient but also transparent and fair,” stated the release.

“Our goal is to ensure that the new tolls effectively contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Ghana’s road networks.”

The Ministry confirmed that it will adopt an open and competitive procurement process to establish this new tolling system, ensuring cost-effectiveness and fairness throughout the implementation.

“The Ministry wishes to assure the public of its commitment to introducing a modernized system that addresses the current road maintenance funding challenges of the country,” the release continued.

After being suspended in 2021, road and bridge tolls are set to make a comeback in Ghana.

The reintroduction of the tolls is expected to be met with mixed reactions from the public. While some acknowledge the need for adequate road maintenance funding, others are wary of additional tax, especially considering the existing taxes which have not been scrapped yet.
