The College of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has refused to comply with a directive from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to end its ongoing strike.

In a bold move, CETAG has challenged the FWSC to take legal action if they wish to enforce government compliance with its duties.

The FWSC had previously demanded that CETAG immediately halt its strike, which began on June 14, 2024.

The Commission labeled CETAG’s action as a betrayal of trust, particularly given the government’s efforts to address their concerns.

FWSC CEO Benjamin Arthur, speaking to the media in Accra, stated that the government has demonstrated a spirit of cooperation and has made concessions to address the needs of educators.

He urged CETAG to return to teaching duties, emphasizing that the strike is founded on mistrust.

However, CETAG President Prince Obeng-Himah, in an interview with Citi FM, firmly asserted that the strike is a legal action undertaken to protect their constitutional rights.

He stressed that CETAG has not acted unlawfully and that the law supports their position.

“…It is a legal action we have taken to protect our economic rights and that is enshrined in the labour act which is under the 1992 constitution. We haven’t erred in any way. The law is on our side”

He has therefore urged the CETAG members to stand with the leadership and continue the strike until the government complies with their demands.

“We can tell our people that the law is on our side, they should rally behind leadership. Let’s carry through with the process until such a time that the govt complies.”
