The College of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has doubled down on its ongoing strike, refusing to heed calls from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to end the industrial action.

CETAG maintains that the strike will continue until the government fully complies with their demands.

The FWSC had previously criticized CETAG’s strike, deeming it uncooperative given the government’s efforts to address their concerns.

However, CETAG has stood firm, arguing that their actions are legal and necessary to protect the economic rights of their members.

The strike, which began on June 14, 2024, has brought teaching to a standstill across all 46 public colleges of education in Ghana.

The primary issues behind the strike are the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and the non-implementation of agreed-upon service conditions.

CETAG demands the payment of one month’s salary for extra duties performed in 2022 and the application of allowance rates similar to those of public universities.

Despite ongoing negotiations, CETAG argues that the government has yet to fulfill their obligations.

CETAG President, Prince Obeng-Himah has reiterated the association’s commitment to the strike, emphasizing its legal basis and the need to safeguard members’ economic rights.

He urged all members to remain steadfast in their support for the leadership until their demands are met.
