The University of Cape Coast’s Centre for Teacher Professional Development has announced an extension of the 2024 Teaching Practice for education students (from the University) currently undertaking their Macro Teaching.

Initially set to conclude in December 2024, the programme has now been extended to January 31, 2025.

In a letter dated 13th December 2024, and signed by Dr. Bernard Yaw Sekyi Acquah, Director of CTPD, the extension is attributed to the delayed reporting of Form One students and the insufficient number of supervisions completed by trainee teachers.

“This has become necessary because of the late reporting of Form One (1) students. Most of the Trainee teachers have not received the required number of supervisions needed”

The extension also aims to ensure that all trainee teachers meet the National Teaching Standards.

The Centre for Teacher Professional Development has requested that participating schools allow trainee teachers to complete their practice during this extended period, adding that this phase of their training is crucial for their development and compliance with national standards.

The Macro teaching is an essential phase of the teacher training programme where trainees practice and refine their teaching skills in a real classroom setting.

Unlike the micro-teaching, which focuses on short, specific teaching episodes, macro teaching involves longer and more comprehensive lessons, typically spanning an entire class period or more.

During this phase, trainee teachers are given the opportunity to plan, deliver, and evaluate full-length lessons under the supervision of experienced educators.

This process helps them develop a deeper understanding of classroom management, lesson planning, and the implementation of various teaching strategies.

Macro teaching provides invaluable hands-on experience, allowing trainees to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations.

It also helps them build confidence and competence in managing classroom dynamics, engaging students, and assessing learning outcomes.

Ultimately, this phase is crucial in preparing trainees to meet the demands of the teaching profession and contribute effectively to student learning.
