Over 460,000 Ghanaian students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are facing an uncertain future due to a delay in the release of their results.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed the delay to a technical malfunction—a breakdown of the scanners used to process objective test answer sheets.

According to WAEC Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the council is awaiting GH¢118 million (approximately USD 15.7 million) in outstanding funds from the Ministry of Education to repair the scanner in order to complete the scanning process and release the results.

This delay has caused significant anxiety among students and parents, as the WASSCE results are needed for their university admissions, especially those who applied as ‘awaiting results’.

The 2024 WASSCE, administered to 247,657 female and 212,954 male candidates across 1,003 schools, concluded on September 20th.

The examination itself was not without incident; WAEC previously reported several infractions involving supervisors, invigilators, and candidates, including the distribution of answers and the smuggling of mobile phones into examination halls.

WAEC has cautioned the public to disregard any unofficial information circulating online regarding the results’ release date, emphasizing that an official announcement will be made once the technical issues are resolved.

It should be noted that the council has not yet provided a timeline for the results release.
