The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called on the government for the immediate implementation of their staff migration and all-year-round work compensation as part of the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) arbitral awards.

According to CETAG, the NLC compulsory arbitration awards issued on May 2, 2023, included orders for the payment of a one-month salary as compensation for additional duties performed in 2022, application of agreed rates payable to public universities, and implementation of a completed staff audit exercise within a specified timeline which has elapsed.

In a press release dated December 16, 2024, CETAG highlighted the continuous deceptive treatments from their employer regarding the implementation of these awards.

Despite calling off their prolonged strike, which took place from June 14 to August 19, 2024, after receiving assurances from government officials, the association has reported no significant progress.

The employer had promised to migrate Colleges of Education Teachers onto their affiliate university payrolls by October 30, 2024. However, four months post-strike, CETAG members are still facing delays and unfulfilled promises.

CETAG stated, “It’s been four months since the strike was called off on August 20, 2024, and all the employer has done is to continuously deceive our members with letters, verbal assurances, and supposed incessant correction of errors in the audited staff data for migration onto the University Pay Structure.”

Furthermore, CETAG pointed out that the All-Year-Round Compensation (AYRC), which was to be paid by August 31, 2024, has only been fully disbursed to four out of 46 colleges.

“We consider this promised and failed attitude of the employer to be a deliberate attempt to eventually deny us what is due us,” CETAG remarked.

The association has issued a stern warning that if the NLC’s Compulsory Arbitration Awards are not fully implemented by December 20, 2024, they will take further action.

“We shall advise ourselves and no amount of talks or interventions from any quarters shall get us to rescind our decision,” CETAG declared.

The situation remains tense as CETAG awaits the employer’s compliance with the arbitration awards.

The association has urged the press and the general public to take note of their plight and support their cause.
