The University of Ghana (UG) has been directed by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to reduce its residential facility fees by 25% for all students, effective immediately.
This follows a recent 20% increase that brought the annual accommodation charge to GH₵3,000, sparking widespread student and parental outcry.
Minister Iddrisu announced the directive on February 5, 2025, after a meeting with the university’s management and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). The reduction will bring the fee down to GH₵2,500.
“I have asked the Vice-Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25% and have also directed her to engage with the SRC in the future before announcing any fee adjustments,” Iddrisu stated.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Amfo, assured the Minister of the university’s cooperation, saying, “We have listened to you, our minister, and also to our students, and we can afford to implement the 25% reduction across the board. Going forward, there will be better student engagement in such decisions.”
The SRC President, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known as Guru, welcomed the reduction but emphasized the need for refunds for students who had already paid the full amount.
“We appreciate the reduction—it will ease some of the financial burden on parents. However, there should be a refund for those who have already made payments,” he stated

With approximately 80% of students having already paid their residential fees, the university’s management has pledged to release further details on the implementation of the revised charges and the process for refunds.
