The Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed plans to review the curriculum of colleges of education in order to integrate the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), if given the mandate.

During his vetting on January 20, 2025, Iddrisu responded to a question posed by the minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding the licensure exams.

He explained that the curriculum review would incorporate the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) into the final year curriculum of colleges of education.

According to him, this change aims to ensure that trainees take the GTLE on their respective campuses before returning to their homes.

The GTLE, introduced by the National Teaching Council (NTC), is a crucial examination for prospective teachers in Ghana.

It evaluates candidates’ understanding of essential teaching principles and their ability to apply this knowledge effectively in the classroom.

The exam consists of three papers: General Professional Knowledge, Grade-Level Specialism Pedagogy, and Multiple Subject Content or Single Subject Content Knowledge.

Passing the GTLE grants professional licensure, recognizing teachers both in Ghana and abroad.

The Minister-designate clarified that the exams would not be scrapped, as some had misinterpreted, but would be integrated into the final year assessments.

Currently, trainees must complete their programs, return home, and then register for the exams separately at different venues.

The said review would streamline this process, allowing trainees to take the exams as part of their final year assessments on campus.

Haruna Iddrisu expressed hope that this review would make the licensure exams more accessible and convenient for trainees, ultimately enhancing the quality of teacher education in the country
