The Public Service Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has announced an indefinite strike by staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) over poor working conditions.
The strike, which commenced on June 10th, is due to the government’s failure to address the union’s concerns regarding salaries, allowances, and other benefits.
The union had previously issued a strike notice in March 2024 but postponed it following the intervention of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.

However, the government’s lack of progress in the negotiation process has forced the union to resume its industrial action.
According to a statement from the PSWU, the strike is prompted by several factors, including undue delays in the negotiation process and the failure to grant institution-specific allowances to NIA staff.
The strike will affect all NIA offices nationwide, including district, regional, and premium centers. Services at these centers, including national identification card issuance and registration, will be suspended until further notice.

The PSWU has urged its members to adhere to the strike decision and refrain from carrying out any work-related activities.
