Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, to provide support to nonperforming schools rather than shutting them down.
Speaking to the NDC branch executives at Adudwama in the Ahafo Ano South East Constituency on March 19, Mr Mahama emphasized the importance of providing teaching and learning materials to schools to improve their performance.
He criticized the Minister’s plan to close down nonperforming schools, saying that it is essential to understand the reasons behind their poor performance.
According to John Mahama, schools may lack adequate teaching staff or resources such as books and other learning materials.
He further suggested that if the Education Minister cannot provide the necessary support, he should resign for another person to take over.

In contrast, Dr Osei Adutwum, in announcing the move, called on the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and Principals of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institutions to improve their performances or face the risk of closure.
He also suggested developing programs to help schools with a consistent zero to ten percent pass rate, thereby ensuring their students have opportunities for further studies.
