The results of the 2023 Ghana Teacher licensure exam are alarming, with a staggering 84% of graduates who sat for the exam failing to pass.

The situation is even more concerning as 87% of re-sit candidates failed again in Literacy, and 14 cases of exam malpractices, including impersonation and copying from mobile phones, were reported.

As someone who has reviewed some of the literacy scripts, Asare attests that some are nauseating.

“It is difficult to imagine how our classrooms would be if such individuals, who cannot even string a sentence together in English, found their way there without licensure”, he stated.

Asare implores all stakeholders to come together and work towards reforming the education system before it’s too late.

He questions how these individuals graduated from university without basic literacy skills and stress the need to refurbish the entire education system.

“The National Teaching Council is doing a good job by sieving the best for our schools, but more needs to be done. Even spelling “organizer” is a problem for some graduates, which is unacceptable, and urgent action is needed to address this issue.”, Kofi Asare concluded.
