PRINCOF Extends Contact Hours For Trainees to Recover Lost Periods in August 2023

The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education-Ghana (PRINCOF) has taken steps to address the lost teaching and learning weeks caused by the one-month strike action of the Colleges of Education Tutors Association of Ghana (CETAG).

In a letter addressed to the Honorable Minister of Education, through the Director-General of GTEC, PRINCOF outlined their actions to resolve the issue.

Dated 13th September 2023, the letter stated that following the suspension of the CETAG strike action on Thursday 7th September 2023, PRINCOF swiftly made a decision to extend the teaching hours across the 46 colleges of education.

The revised teaching calendar now runs from 6.00am to 8.00pm, effectively adding an extra 15 hours to compensate for the time lost during the strike period.

The strike action mainly affected the level 100 students, who received only three weeks of instruction out of the scheduled 13 weeks before the strike began.

The Level 300 students on the other hand were able to complete their semester successfully in August. The second years lost only a week as the strike was suspended a week after their resumption.

PRINCOF’s proactive approach in revising the teaching calendar aims to ensure that the affected level 100 students receive the necessary education they missed during the strike period.

PRINCOF also reported that the implementation of the extended teaching by tutors in the colleges is progressing steadily.

In their letter, PRINCOF also made a passionate appeal to the Minister of Education to reconsider the issue of non-payment of salaries for CETAG tutors for August 2023.

They stated that the tutors are remorseful and have learned their lessons.
