The Ministry of Education is facing pressure from Parliament to reconsider its decision to have first year students of senior high schools (SHS) report on Monday, December 4, 2023.
In a recent parliamentary session, it was proposed that first year students of senior high schools (SHS) should report in January 2024 instead of the previously scheduled date of Monday, December 4, 2023.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, has urged the Ministry of Education to reconsider their decision in order to allow sufficient time for parents and teachers to adequately prepare.

The Speaker has invited the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, to appear before the House on Monday, December 4 to provide further information on the reopening date and address any related concerns.
This call for a revised reopening date comes after a statement made by Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi North and Ranking Member on Education, who expressed concerns about the rushed schedule.
MPs from the minority side also raised concerns about the challenges faced by parents in preparing their children for school within such a short period.
They found it difficult to comprehend the decision to release school placements just two days prior and subsequently expect students to report on Monday.
Additionally, the MPs said they had received calls from constituents seeking support or changes in their placement.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu, shared that he has received calls from teachers expressing fatigue and requested that they be given some time to rest before the start of the new academic term.
The Education Ministry has yet to respond to these concerns, but it is clear that there is significant pressure for the reopening date for first year SHS students to be pushed back.
