The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a directive to all Colleges of Education, mandating that teaching staff be referred to as “Lecturers” instead of “Tutors”.

This decision follows the migration of faculty and staff of the colleges of education onto the public universities’ salary structure, which effectively renders the term “Tutor” obsolete.

In an official statement signed by Professor Augustine Ocloo, the Acting Deputy Director-General of GTEC, the commission emphasized the necessity of this change.

“The Commission finds the continued use of the ‘Tutor’ nomenclature unacceptable,” GTEC stated. “By virtue of the migration onto the public universities’ salary structure, the nomenclature ‘Tutor’ has been effectively extinct and replaced with ‘Lecturer’.”

GTEC further reminded the Colleges of Education that the statutes, schemes of service, and conditions of service of the affiliate universities will henceforth dictate the requirements for staff appointments and promotions.

“The Commission further wishes to remind all Colleges that the statutes, schemes of service, and conditions of service of the affiliate universities will dictate the requirements for staff appointments and promotions forthwith.”

This move is aimed at standardizing the titles within the tertiary education system and ensuring that the nomenclature aligns with the new salary structure and associated benefits.
