The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has emphasized that the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy does not need a comprehensive review despite the challenges it faces.
He stated that the policy necessitates targeted improvements in specific areas rather than an overall review.
The minister’s remarks come in response to earlier announcements by John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who expressed his intention to conduct a comprehensive review of the Free SHS within the first 100 days of taking office if elected in the 2024 general elections.

Addressing the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, Mahama underscored the importance of establishing a strong basic education foundation and outlined his plan to convene a panel of educational experts to develop an enhanced framework for implementing the Free SHS policy.
Mahama emphasized the need for a broad spectrum of stakeholders to be involved in the review process, including educationists, teachers, parents, students, and opinion leaders.
In response to calls for a review of the Free SHS policy, Dr. Adutwum emphasized that the current program does not require a review but rather targeted improvements.
He stressed the importance of focusing on teacher training to ensure educators are well-prepared for effective teaching, ultimately leading to improved learning outcomes.
