Professor Samuel Atintono, the President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PrinCof) and Principal of Accra College of Education has shed light on one of the important assessment many are talking about concerning the Colleges of Education in Ghana – Licensure Examination.
According to Prof. Atintono, colleges are unable to incorporate the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) into their internal examination schedules due to certain constraints.
One of the main reasons cited by Prof. Atintono is the fact that the current Curriculum Framework that governs Colleges of Education does not include provisions for the GTLE. As a result, until this regulation is revisited and amended, the GTLE will be conducted separately from the internal examinations of the colleges.
Despite this challenge, Prof. Atintono recognized the importance of having an external body oversee the licensure examination.
He expressed his support for the National Teaching Council (NTC) in serving as a neutral party responsible for supervising the GTLE. “By involving the NTC in this process, the quality of training received by prospective teachers can be effectively assessed”, he stated
During his appearance on the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s (GBC) current affairs program, “TALKING POINT,” on June 25th, 2023, Prof Atintono emphasized the significance of addressing this issue to ensure that the preparation of new teachers meets the highest standards.

He opined that it is essential to re-evaluate the regulations surrounding the inclusion of the GTLE in Colleges of Education’s internal examination schedules.
“By working together with the NTC, our colleges can ensure that prospective teachers receive rigorous training and are well-prepared to meet the demands of the Ghanaian education system” Prof. concluded.
