In a recent message circulated by a concerned group, graduates who are set to write the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) have expressed their dissatisfaction with the exorbitant fees and high pass mark set by the National Teaching Council (NTC).

The group commends the NTC for its efforts in ensuring that the nation receives qualified teachers who meet international standards. They acknowledge that they have never doubted the council’s commitment to excellence. However, they raise concerns about recent changes in the examination requirements.

Previously, trainees and other students who met the minimum requirements for the exams paid a registration fee of Ghc220.00, with a pass mark of 50%. This pass mark is consistent with the standards used by both traditional and private universities. However, the recent announcement by the NTC has left them troubled.

According to the concerned group, the NTC stated that registration for three papers by trainees and other students will now cost Gh¢510.00 via mobile money payment and Ghc500.00 via bank payment. This represents an almost 125% increase in registration fees.

Furthermore, the NTC has increased the pass mark from 50% to 70% without providing any explanation for this significant change. This decision has raised serious concerns among the graduates, as over 92% of candidates failed the examination this year under the previous pass mark.

The graduates find themselves in a state of dilemma, unsure of how to proceed. They believe that the sudden increase in fees and pass mark without any clear justification is unfair and puts them at a disadvantage.

In light of these concerns, the Concerned Students Association is calling on the NTC to provide a detailed explanation for the changes in fees and pass mark for the 2023 GTLE Examination. They believe that transparency is crucial in ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for all aspiring teachers.
