The Ministry of Education has made a release regarding the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

According to the released document dated 9th of August, 2023, which was signed by the Director for Tertiary Education, Professor Yayra Dzakadzie (PhD), the ministry has decided to take a firm stance by freezing the salaries of CETAG members.

This decision comes as a response to CETAG’s defiance of the Labour Commission’s ruling on the 2nd of August, 2023.

The ministry has expressed concern over the association’s action, as it believes that such actions undermine the labor laws and disrupt the education sector.

As a result, the ministry has deemed it necessary to intervene and take appropriate measures to address the issue.

In the letter addressed to the principals of the public colleges of education, the Honourable Minister, through the Director for Tertiary Education, has directed them to provide detailed information of their tutors at post in the month of August.

The ministry’s letter emphasizes the importance of the principals complying with this directive, as it seeks to gather accurate and up-to-date information to effectively manage the situation.

It further states, “It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Education that the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has defied the Labour Commission’s ruling on the 2nd of August, 2023, regarding the ongoing strike by the union. This action of CETAG has halted academic work at the public colleges of education.”

This decision by the Ministry of Education has generated mixed reactions from various stakeholders. Some argue that freezing salaries may further exacerbate the situation, as it might provoke more resistance from CETAG members.
