The next Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be written in only five (5) subject areas, as announced by the Deputy Director-General (DDG) for Schools and Instructions at a recent DTSTs training in Kumasi.
Departure from the norm
Traditionally, the BECE has been written in about eight (8) or nine (9) subjects, making this change a significant departure from the norm.
The decision to reduce the number of subjects has raised questions about why this development was not communicated when the 2024 academic year calendar was released months ago.
When will the 2024 BECE start?
According to the 2024 Academic Calendar released by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the 2024 BECE is scheduled to take place in July.

However, no official announcement has been made regarding the reduction in the number of subjects for the upcoming examination.
The Subject Areas
It is expected that the management of GES will issue a letter to either debunk or approve the announcement made by the Deputy Director-General at the DTSTs training in Kumasi.
Until then, the proposed five subjects for the next BECE are;
- Science
- Mathematics
- English Language
- General paper
- Ghanaian Language.
Official communication
If the rumors about this update are indeed true, an official notice will be issued through the offices of the District Directors of Education to inform students, parents, and teachers about the changes to the upcoming BECE.
