Western North Development Association Calls on the Government and the Inspector General of Police to intervene for an everlasting solution against Military Brutality in Bibiani

The Western North Development Association (WENDA) has issued a communique calling on the Government of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Akufo Dampare, and other prominent individuals in the community to help put a stop to the military brutality at Bibiani.

Background

On February 5, 2023, there was a clash between the security men of the Asante Gold Bibiani Limited, a mining company in the area and the residents.

According to reports, On Sunday afternoon, some men from the community went to a refuse dump that belonged to the Company to collect some scraps. In the process, the security men of the company allegedly opened fire on them injuring three. The remaining members were also beaten mercilessly. This has caused unrest in the community for the past few days.

Communique by WENDA

The Leadership of WENDA is therefore calling on the appropriate authorities to intervene for peace to prevail on the land. According to the association, they do not condone the interaction made by the ‘folks’, likewise, they do not accept the action of the military men.

The communique issued by the association reads;

“The association do not support the interaction made by some of the Oldtown residents which led to this. However, we are deeply concerned by the actions of the military towards the them.

We continue to insist that, there should be no room for any further violence at Bibiani Old town. As the earlier unfortunate incident has caused severe injuries to some residents.

On this note, WENDA is therefore calling upon the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Alfred Obeng-Boateng, the Regioal Minister, Hon. Richard Rocky Joojo Obeng, the Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso Nana Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi ll, Chirano Paramount Chief and Bekwai Paramount Chief, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Akufo Dampare, the Minister of Defence Hon. Dominic Nitiwul and the President, Nana Akufo-Addo to come to the aid of the innocent residents of Bibiani Oldtown for peaceful and co-existence to prevail. We need their intervene in order to for an everlasting solution to the issue which led to that incident at the weekend.
