The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the directive to annul all public sector appointments made after December 7, 2024.
This appeal follows an order from the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, instructing all heads of government institutions to cancel public service appointments and recruitments made after the said date.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 25, the Secretary-General of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, warned that the ongoing termination of appointments in the public service, including teachers and nurses who have waited years for employment, could have devastating consequences.
“The mass termination of employment of teachers, nurses, and others, who have been educated at great cost to their families and the nation and who may have stayed at home for years struggling to obtain employment can be devastating for these young men and women. It is a blot on our democratic credentials. It can also completely sap the patriotism of these young men and women,” said Ansah.

The TUC also highlighted reports of appointments being revoked even for individuals whose employment was regularized in December 2024 after years of service.
“This must be heart-breaking for these young men and women who are likely to be entering the labour market for the first time,” the statement read.
The TUC criticized the directive as “problematic” and questioned the rationale behind labeling all appointments made after December 7, 2024, as non-compliant with good governance practices.

The statement also pointed out the recurring nature of “midnight appointments/recruitments,” noting that both the ruling NDC and the opposition NPP have engaged in similar practices.
The TUC highlighted inconsistencies in both parties’ pronouncements and policies on the matter, emphasizing the need for a more principled and consistent approach.
