The Teacher Trainee Association of Ghana (TTAG) is calling on the Government of Ghana and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to increase the allowances paid to teacher trainees in all government-accredited Colleges of Education.

The leadership of the association made this plea during a meeting on the 14th of April to discuss issues affecting teacher trainees.

Reasons for Advocacy:

The leadership of TTAG has stated that the need for an increase in allowances has become necessary due to the constant increase in prices of foodstuff in the country. The current allowance of Gh¢400, out of which Gh¢196 is used for feeding, is no longer enough to cater to the basic needs of trainees.

Current Allowance Paid to Trainees Monthly:

Every teacher trainee is entitled to receive an allowance of Gh¢400 a month. Out of the paid allowance, Gh¢200 goes directly to the trainee’s E-zwich account, while Gh¢196 is sent to the College for feeding. The remaining Gh¢4 is used to pay dues.

Call to Action:

TTAG has urged GTEC to consider increasing the allowances to yield an increment on the feeding component due to the constant hike in prices of foodstuff. The association has also assured its members that it will engage all relevant stakeholders to address the issue.

It is hoped that the government and the relevant authorities will consider the plea of TTAG and take the necessary steps to increase allowances for teacher trainees.
