According to the latest report released by the Ghana Health Service, the country has witnessed a total of 622,849 cases of hypertension and 24,781 cases of stroke as of December 2022.

These cases have been recorded through the District Health Information Management System 2 (DHIMS2), and have been reported in all 16 regions of Ghana.

GHS stated the statistics are alarming, and highlight the urgent need for individuals to take proactive measures to manage their blood pressure and avoid complications such as stroke.

Studies suggest that as much as 28-40% of the adult population in Ghana may suffer from hypertension, making it a major public health concern.

However, the good news is that there are simple lifestyle changes that can help to prevent hypertension or reduce blood pressure in those already diagnosed.

The Ghana Health Service recommends adopting a healthier diet, with lower levels of salt, sugar, and fat and higher amounts of fibre, fruits, and vegetables.

Additionally, increasing physical activity and quitting tobacco use have been proven effective in managing blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke according to GHS

The Ghana Health Service is committed to raising awareness about hypertension and stroke and encourages individuals to take the necessary steps to lead a healthier life.
