In a significant step towards improving reproductive health in the country, the government has announced its commitment to fully integrate family planning services into the National Health Insurance Benefits Package by 2030.
This move aims to ensure that women and girls can access family planning without any barriers or limitations.
During the launch of Ghana’s FP2030 commitments in Accra, Dr. Kofi Issah, the Director of the Family Health Division at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), emphasized the country’s dedication to advancing family planning.
As part of this commitment, the government plans to make the program free in the public sector while also supporting the private sector to provide services for sexually active young people.
The FP2030 initiative is a global movement that advocates for reproductive health services and strives to eliminate obstacles preventing people from accessing voluntary family planning.
It prioritizes increasing access to family planning services for individuals of all ages, regardless of their marital status or physical ability.
Dr. Kofi Issah further highlighted that family planning is not solely focused on reducing the size of families but also aims to ensure equitable and manageable family sizes. By doing so, families, communities, and the country as a whole can benefit from improved health and socio-economic conditions.
Koku Armah, the Youth Focal Person, emphasized that family planning encompasses more than just the use of contraceptives. It also involves providing comprehensive education and information to individuals. By promoting proper education, the country can reduce teenage pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
