The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has responded to the release made by the Ministry of Education on 9th August, 2023, regarding the freezing of their salaries because of their strike action.

The release by the Leadership of CETAG on 11th August, 2023 highlighted their concerns regarding the letter signed by Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie, Director for Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education directing all principals to submit details of tutors at post within the month of August to enable the Ministry to make some critical decisions.

CETAG, in response, strongly objects to the Ministry’s actions and views them as oppressive and unfair. The association believes that the Ministry is using the salary freeze as a way to intimidate and bully its members, who have legitimate grievances regarding their working conditions and remuneration.

CETAG asserts that its members have the right to stand up for their rights without fear of reprisal.

Furthermore, CETAG argues that the Ministry of Education has blatantly flouted the national labour code by failing to engage in meaningful dialogue with the association to address their concerns.

The association stated that they have made numerous attempts to engage the Ministry in constructive discussions but have been met with indifference and disregard.

Consequently, CETAG feels that the Ministry’s decision to freeze their salaries is an attempt to undermine their fight for better working conditions and improvements in the education sector.

CETAG also believes that the Ministry’s actions are a deliberate attempt to silence their voices and suppress their demands. The association asserts that they are prepared to endure any hardships that may come their way as a result of the salary freeze.

According to them, they understand the sacrifices that need to be made to right the wrongs in the education sector and ensure a better future for their students and the nation as a whole.

CETAG is prepared for the worst-case scenario, including the possibility of being sacked for their unwavering stance. The association remains committed to its mission of advocating for the rights and welfare of colleges of education teachers in Ghana
