Second-year students in colleges of education affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have expressed their frustrations about the difficult nature of questions presented to them during their End of Semester exam, which began on Monday, 19th June 2023.

The trainees were taken aback by the seemingly high level of difficulty and complexity of the questions encountered during the assessment.

In March earlier this year, ITECPD announced changes to the exam pattern for the colleges of education. The notable difference in this year’s exam was the absence of multiple choice. The students were presented with open-ended questions, making it more challenging to approach the assessment.

This shift in the exam pattern was meant to assess the students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, as these are essential skills needed in the teaching field.

However, the perceived difficulty of the exam has left many students worried about their chances of success.

One of the papers the students wrote on 19/06/23

The students who are at the forefront of receiving quality education and professional development for the teaching profession in Ghana are worried about the impact of the challenging exam. They are concerned that it may have an adverse effect on their evaluation, which could affect their chances of getting better grades

The students have called on the management of ITECPD and the UEW to review the examination pattern and make it more student-friendly.

We are always talking about caring for diverse learners.
Meanwhile the system of examination introduce now will impede the performance of some students. Most students also improve with the help of objective test, but now that it has been removed how can they sail through. No student is lazy here oo, we learn very hard but in some instances you get to the exam hall and what you learnt is not there.
With this all hope is lost but if the objective is there at least you will make your way out. ITECPD should please reconsider this initiative. Thanks
