Performance Statistics Of the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the provisional results for candidates who sat for the WASSCE for School Candidates 2023 (Ghana only version).

This announcement was made in a statement released by the council to inform its numerous stakeholders.

To enable heads of school to access the results of their candidates, the council revealed that they will provide login details to them.

The results have been hosted online, and candidates who wish to do so can access their results on the council’s website https://ghana.waecdirect.org/

However, the council noted that the results of 4,878 candidates have been blocked.

These candidates have failed to return the learning support materials that were supplied to them by their schools.

The council has instructed these candidates to contact their schools for further instructions.

Caution

The council has also cautioned all its stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee.

Stating that the results are secure and can be authenticated using the council’s results verification system.

They therefore urged the Candidates to download the WAEC QR code and use it to verify their results.

Performance Statistics

A total number of 448,674 candidates made up of 212,453 males and 236,221 females from 975 schools entered for the examination.

This figure is 5.8% higher than the 2022 entry figure of 422,883. A total number of 3,404 (0.75%) were absent from the examination.

The performance of candidates with respect to the four Core Subjects is shown in the tables below;

Table 2 shows fluctuating trends in performance for candidates in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science while Social Studies shows an upward trend in performance of the candidates over the four-year period.

Examination Irregularities

Following completion of investigations into some of the cases of irregularity reported during the conduct of the examination, the 35th Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee, held on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 approved as follows: ‘

  • Cancellation of Subject Results of 3,647 candidates for bringing foreign material like prepared notes, text books, and printed material into the examination halls;
  • Cancellation of Entire Results of 839 candidates for possession of mobile phones in the examination halls;
  • Withholding of Subject Results of 4,280 candidates and the Entire Results of 1,005 for various suspected offences;

Yet still, some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence generated answers.

These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of investigations.

Conclusion

The Council expressed its sincerest gratitude to stakeholders especially the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, the Security Agencies, Heads of Schools, Supervisors, Invigilators, Examiners and all who in various ways supported it in the successful conduct of the examination and release of the results.
