In a recent press release, the Ghana Nurse and Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) has submitted a petition to the government urging immediate action to address the critical issue of their unpaid allowances.
According to the release signed by GNMTA President Pascal Adumbisa, the trainees have been grappling with the non-payment of their allowances for over a year.
Despite their persistent efforts to address the matter and find a resolution, the trainees have yet to receive any positive response from the government regarding their rightful entitlements.

The prolonged delay in receiving their allowances has further exacerbated the hardships faced by these trainees, as they greatly depend on these funds to support their education and general well-being.
The GNMTA emphasizes the urgency of the situation and calls upon the government to take immediate action in rectifying this issue
It is worth noting that the restoration of the Nurses and Midwifery trainee allowances was initiated by President Akufo-Addo in 2017.
This initiative was received with optimism and was regarded as a critical step towards uplifting the healthcare sector.
However, the current situation has cast doubt on the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of these trainees.
Elaborating on the specifics of the petition, Adumbisa revealed that some trainees received a three-month allowance in March, but for the year 2022, not 2023.

Furthermore, payments for September, October, and November 2021 were made, but those who recently completed their training have not received their allowances for June and December of the same year.
This inconsistency in payment has added to the financial burden faced by the trainees, hindering their ability to concentrate on their studies and limiting their potential for future excellence.

The GNMTA implores the government to rectify this matter without further delay.
