Ministry of Health Announces 2023/2024 Admissions for Public Health Training Institutions in Ghana

The Ministry of Health in Ghana has officially announced the opening of the online admissions portal for the 2023/2024 academic year for entry into any of the Public Health Training Institutions in the country.

The portal will be accessible from Monday 24th April, 2023 to Friday 30th June, 2023. This announcement is aimed at informing the general public, especially qualified candidates, about the admission process and requirements.

In this article, we will provide detailed information about the application process, including the purchase of application codes, requirements, and guidelines for filling the application form. We will also highlight some important points that applicants need to note to avoid any complications during the admission process.

Purchasing Application Codes and Vouchers

Applicants who are interested in applying for admission to any of the Public Health Training Institutions in Ghana must purchase application codes from any Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) or Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) branch at a cost of Two Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢200.00).

Upon payment, applicants will receive a voucher with a unique PIN and Serial Number that they will need to access the online application form. It is important to note that all purchased vouchers will be valid up to 5th July, 2023, if not used.

Requirements for Filling the Application Form

To successfully complete the application process, applicants must have a dedicated phone number and a personal valid e-mail address for all correspondence. It is crucial to ensure that the provided e-mail address is not that of any of your relations.

Additionally, applicants must have their residential and Ghana Post Digital Address available when filling the application form.

Accessing the Online Registration Form

To access the online registration form, applicants must use the PIN code and Serial Number received after purchasing the application voucher.

The registration form is only accessible by the PIN and Serial Number provided on the voucher. It is essential to note that the form can only be filled once.

Guidelines for Filling the Application Form

Applicants are encouraged to follow the instructions carefully when filling the relevant stages of the admission process. It is crucial to ensure that all information provided on the form is accurate and up-to-date. Any wrong filling of the form may adversely affect an applicant’s admission.

Tracking the Status of the Admission Process

Applicants can use the provided PIN and Serial Number to track the status of their admission process. The portal will provide updates on the admission process, including the status of the application and the interview invitation.

Invitation to Competitive Interview

Only applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited to attend a competitive interview at the school of their choice. It is important to note that attending the interview does not guarantee admission.

Admission will be based on the results of the interview and other admission requirements.

Visit Health Training Institutions for Assistance

Applicants who need assistance filling their application form can visit any of the Health Training Institutions nearby. The staff at the institutions will be available to provide guidance and assistance.

Entry Requirements for Auxiliary Nursing Programmes

Auxiliary nursing programmes in Ghana are divided into two categories; Nurse Assistant Clinical (NAC) and Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAP). The entry requirements for these programmes are as follows:

Explanation of Entry Requirements:

  1. Age: Applicants must be between the ages of 16 to 35 years.
  2. Overall Aggregate: Applicants must have a cutoff aggregate score of Forty (40) or better in six subjects, comprising 3 core and 3 elective subjects for WASSCE and Thirty Eight (38) or better in six subjects, comprising 3 core and 3 elective subjects for SSSCE.
  3. Core Subjects and Minimum Grades: Applicants must have at least Passes (A-E) in three core subjects, i.e. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science for WASSCE and at least credits (A1-E8) in three core subjects, i.e. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science for SSSCE.
  4. Elective Subjects and Minimum Grades: Applicants must have at least passes (A-E) in three Elective subjects for WASSCE and at least passes (A1-E8) in three Elective subjects for SSSCE.

Diploma Nursing Programmes:

Diploma Nursing Programmes: Diploma Nursing Programmes offered in Health Training Institutions in Ghana are Registered General Nursing, Registered Mental Nursing, Registered Midwifery (for females only), Registered Community Health Nursing, and Registered Community Psychiatric Nursing. The entry requirements for these programmes are as follows:

Entry Requirements for Diploma Nursing Programmes

  • Age: Applicants must be between 16 and 35 years old.
  • Overall Aggregate: A cut-off aggregate score of 36 or better in six subjects for WASSCE or 24 or better for SSSCE, comprising 3 core and 3 elective subjects.
  • Core Subjects and Minimum Grades: Credits (A-D) in three core subjects, i.e. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science for WASSCE, or at least credits (A1-C6) in the same subjects for SSSCE.
  • Elective Subjects and Minimum Grades: Credits (A-D) in three elective subjects for WASSCE or at least passes (A1-C6) for SSSCE.

Post Basic Nursing and Midwifery Programmes Entry Requirements

The requirements for Post Basic Nursing and Midwifery Programmes are dependent on the program of study. Each program has specific requirements. For individuals applying to these programs, they must be medically fit and not over 50 years of age.

BSc. Peri-Operative Nursing

For BSc. Peri-Operative Nursing, a mandatory one-year rotation/internship/national service is required, along with an RGN qualification. For BSc. Critical Care Nursing, candidates must have three years of experience in a relevant basic area or SRN RMN qualifications.

BSc. Ophthalmic Nursing

BSc. Ophthalmic Nursing requires two years of work experience upon request from PHN, and a valid license. For BSc. Public Health Nursing, candidates need an RCPN qualification and a valid license. For BSc. ENT Nursing, a mandatory one-year rotation/internship/national service is required along with an RGN qualification. Additionally, candidates must have three years of experience in a relevant basic area or two years of work experience upon request from a facility after internship.

Post Midwifery programs

For Post Midwifery programs, candidates must have at least three years of experience in a relevant Auxiliary area, possess a Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAP) or Nurse Assistant Clinical (NAC) qualifications, and a valid license. For BSc. Anesthesia, candidates must complete a one-year rotation/internship/national service and have a General Nurse or Physician Assistant (Medical) qualification. They must also have two years of experience in a relevant basic area or one year of work experience upon request from a facility after internship.

BSc. Environmental Health

For BSc. Environmental Health, candidates must have a diploma in Environmental Health from an accredited institution, be a WASSCE student with Pure Science qualifications, or possess WAHEB/GHAHEB Pure Science WASSCE.
