Students at Savannah College of Education, Daboya are voicing serious concerns over the institution’s status and recent alleged worsening infrastructural challenges.

The uncertainty surrounding the college’s absorption as a public institution, coupled with overcrowding and inadequate facilities, has left many students frustrated.

According to reports, over 928 students were admitted for the 2024/2025 academic year, leading to an alleged severe congestion in hostels and lecture halls.

According to some of the students who spoke with Coleman Publications, the situation is so dire that some students are allegedly forced to sleep on the floor due to inadequate accommodation.

Some also alleged that the lecture halls are also overstretched, with over 205 students crammed into classrooms, particularly in the Junior High School Education department.

“We’re packed into lecture halls like sardines,” said one student, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Some of us are even forced to sleep on the floor because there aren’t enough beds in the hostels.”

Confusion Over the College’s Absorption

The biggest concern shared among students is the uncertainty surrounding the College’s absorption as a public college of education.

According to the students, though the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) announced the absorption on 28th October, 2024, the college still operates as a private institution, creating confusion over fees, funding, and future prospects for students.

The SRC leadership and concerned students noted that they have made several attempts to seek official clarification from management. However, these efforts have yielded no clear response.

A recent meeting with the college authorities ended inconclusively, as key administrators, including the principal, were unavailable.

“We need answers, and we need them now,” said a representative from the SRC. “We can’t continue to study under these conditions, not knowing what our future holds.”

Protests and Student Unrest

Information gathered revealed that frustration over the situation recently led to heightened tensions on campus. Some Level 100 students, determined to get answers, planned a peaceful demonstration but were warned of consequences if they failed to follow due process.

Amid rising agitation, some students took their concerns to the Daboya Police Station and Wasipe Chief’s Palace, demanding an official response on the school’s status.

This led to the arrest of two students, who were later granted bail following SRC intervention.

Call for Immediate Action

Students of the college are calling on GTEC, the Ministry of Education, and the college management to provide an official update on the institution’s status, address the pressing accommodation and infrastructure challenges, and ensure that students are not left in limbo regarding their education.

It is hoped that the management of the college will also issue an official statement on the college’s status and all the allegations raised by the students concerning their welfare.
