Komenda College of Education launches “One Student, One Tree initiative”

“When the last tree dies, the last man dies”. This saying is one of the commonest in the Ghanaian society, however, its meaning is rarely put into consideration.

Trees can be determined one of the life dependents of man, and without trees it is doubtful that man will be able to survive even on the second in the environment.

This, therefore, called for the Launch of the Second Edition of the GREEN GHANA PROJECT by The President of the Republic, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, on Tuesday, 1st March, 2022, for the need to take good care and plant more trees in our societies.

As part of moderation to create awareness and arouse interest in the second edition of the Green Ghana Project launched by the government, Management of Komenda College of Education in line with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ initiative has activated the ‘One Student, One Tree policy in the college

The programme which was launched at the forecourt of the college administration block by the Principal, Very Reverend Kwesi Nkum Wilson(PhD) on Friday, June 10, 2022, aims at blending the learners in the institution in the tree-planting exercise to help reach at least the 20 million trees target set by the government.

Under this module, learners reading any programme in the college will be encouraged to plant trees and nurture them with guidance from the Agriculture Department of the College .

Addressing the learners, Very Reverend Kwesi Nkum Wilson(PhD), disclosed that the goal of the initiative is to also inculcate the habit of planting trees into the learners.

He acknowledged the strategic role of the schools in government’s bid to protect the environment and assured that, the college as the pace setter will ensure learners plant and nurture their trees to help achieve the target set for the 2022 Green Ghana Project.

Elaborating on the importance of the country’s forest reserves and the need to protect them, Dr. Kwesi Nkum Wilson advanced the viewpoint that the forest offers benefits such as serving as wildlife, windbreaks, regulation of atmospheric temperature, provision of natural resource and income, provision revenue and eco-tourism.

He, noted however that, despite the immense benefits derived from the forest, human activities over the years have threatened the country’s forest cover and as the government of H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo deems it extremely important to plant more trees to avert a futuristic danger, so is the college.

Having established the crucial role of trees to the survival of mankind, Very Reverend Kwesi Nkum Wilson(PhD) with his Management entreated all the learners in the college to welcome the Green Ghana Project and take part in the tree planting exercise.

He added that, the Ministry has make available trees to all tertiary institutions in the country including Komenda college of Education so that learners will have no difficulty contributing to this worthy cause.

He mentioned that, Komenda college of Education has received one-thousand(1000) coconut seedlings, Two-thousand(2000) cedrus deodara trees and three-thousand(3000) acacia for the exercise.

The Vice Principal, Mr. Theouplius Kweku Bassaw, who moderated the programme also appealed to the learners and staff to actively participate in the exercise and help government build a sustainable environment.

The remaining Hours of the day was used for the planting exercise with the Principal planting the first tree.
