Komenda College of Education is a composite educational teacher education tertiary institution located along the coast of the town of Komenda in the Central Region (Ghana).

It tends to be included as one of the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana. The Principal is Rev. Dr. Kwesi Nkum Wilson

History has it that Komenda College of Education was established in 1948, on a site which has been used by the British Navy during World War II.

Komenda College of Education started with the buildings (Barracks) left by the Fleet Air Arm of the British Navy after  World War II.

Through the efforts of Mr. A.B. Sam, regent of Komenda, the legacy was leased to the Methodist Church Ghana, in 1947 to be used as a training college.

The government made some renovation works on the buildings to make them suitable for educational use.

On March 11, 1948, the first batch of students numbering forty men was enrolled to start an initial 2-year Teacher’s Cert ‘B’ program.

In 1952, the college became a co-educational institution with its first batch of thirty women.

The first principal of the college was Mr.Lawrence Alfred Creedy, a British citizen. 

The motto of the college is “Bepכwso Kurow Hyer3n”, meaning a city set on a hill, shines forth. MHB 577 is the college hymn.

The adopted strands by the founding father were; Academic excellence, Service to God, and Service to mankind.

Messrs R.C. Mensah, C.K. Penrose, Wonderful Dadson, K.A. Essuman, and J.C.O. Okyere were among the pioneer tutors of the college

Some Achievements

The institution has chalked a lot of successes in the academic as well as the social field as enshrined in the three main strands of the founding fathers: Academic Excellence, Service to God, and Service to Mankind.

Academically, the college has exhibited her tour de force which has enabled her to be recognized among the best of the colleges of education.

This is testified in the results of the examinations conducted by the Institute of Education, University of Cape Coast.

Her performance has always been one of the best. In 1990, the college was given an award by the professional Board of the University of Cape Coast for consistent performance in examinations for five years beginning from 1985 – 1990.

The college placed an overall 3rd position out of the 38 public training colleges in Ghana in the first-semester examination of the 2007/2008 academic year.

Several Methodist Ministers are old students of Komenda College. Notable among them being Rt. Rev. Dr. Asante-Antwi, the immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, the Rt. Rev. Isaac K. Quansah, the outgoing Bishop of the Cape Coast Diocese, Methodist Church, is also the Board Chairman.

Another remarkable achievement is that some past students of Komenda College (KOSA) are lecturers in Ghanaian Universities.

Examples are Prof. Ansu-Kyeremeh, Dr. Essuman Johnson, and Mr. Joshua Alfred Amuah all of the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. J. K. Aboagye, Dr. Dora Edu-Boando, Mr. Philip Amuah, Mr. Gabriel Essilfie, Mr. Karl Max Ghansah and Mr. Alexander Hope of the University of Cape Coast, Very Rev. Samuel Kodwo Enninful of KNUST and Dr. Joseph Osapah Mankoe of the University College of Education, Winneba.

Mention could also be made of Capt. Samuel Saltson of the Military and A. S. P. Kwesi Asare of the Ghana Police Service.

People have a lot of misconceptions about colleges of education and Komenda College of Education at large but I would like to use this article to eradicate such thoughts by announcing that Komenda College of Education is a great and prestigious educational institution and does its best to produce great and mighty citizens just like any of our traditional universities.

Komenda College of Education is an amazing place and here are some reasons:

First of all, the institution has a rich and admirable culture. Here, students are trained to become well-rounded and effective teachers once they are through as a result, they have some minor activities they perform such as scrubbing and weeding.

These activities set the mind to be mentally prepared once the needed rest has been attained.

It also ensures one is productive even in the comforts of their homes as they acquire some necessary skills to ensure productivity.

It also helps to ensure effective time management since one has to prepare a scheduled outline of the activities to be performed.

Prescribed Uniform

Students have prescribed uniforms they wear. These they wear to ensure that the appropriate style of dressing is enforced since pupils tend to subconsciously emulate the actions of teachers and the style of dressing

Academics
Also, academics are entreated with the most credibility. Here the tutors are well-equipped and understandable. They educate you on how to teach a child as they apply real-life scenarios to what they are been taught.

Quizzes, assignments, presentations, and supported teaching in schools are all part of the academic agenda which has been set in place to mold a well-rounded teacher.

The college is now running four-year degree courses, as a result, each student will attain a degree once he graduates and not a diploma.

There are refurbished laboratories for the sciences, this helps expose the student to the use of such apparatus.

Sign Language
The school has initiated the teaching and learning of sign language. This is to ensure inclusivity in our schools.

The examination is a serious activity in the institution since failure in any of the courses results in a re-sit and any examination malpractice can result in serious punishment.

In addition, the school has adequate facilities to see to the day- to day running of the college.

The college has an administration, science laboratory, ICT laboratory, library, dining hall, lecture halls, and halls of residence.

These ensure the peaceful stay of students in the college as they always have everything at their disposal.

They even have buses that send them to their various schools for supported teaching in schools.

Furthermore, the college has some entertaining events. The institution has stipulated periods where games and other entertaining events have been dated. On Saturday the college has jams, movie nights, and variety shows.

They also have sporting events like football, athletics, basketball, and handball.

The school also has its most price entertaining activity Miss Akwaba.

The freshers participate in a talent show as they talk about the regions of Ghana and exhibit their prowess in their areas of specialty.

There are also anticipated programs like the SRC week, classical night, dinner night, and even parties in the park.

There is a saying, “All work and no play makes jack a dull boy” due to this, these activities tend to relax as well as refresh the students to continue with their various studies.

In addition, the school has a steady spiritual culture. The school has activities that ensure the spiritual growth of the students.

The school also organizes activities like gospel rock shows, bible studies, and quizzes.

Finally, the college serves as goodwill for its students. Komenda College of education serves as a goodwill for the students in the sense that the name is like a pass that will allow you to get into higher places.

One will ask is there any prominent alumnus? Well, they are a lot and they are out there waiting to show their appreciation by helping a fellow Kosa.
