As part of its commitment to preparing teacher trainees for their Supported Teaching in School(STS) programs, the STS Unit of Komenda College of Education has organized a comprehensive training session.

The purpose of the training which took place on July 18th, 2023 at the Robert Mensa Complex Hall was to familiarize trainees with acceptable practices and expectations for their STS programs, including observations, reflections, lessons delivery, and other practices that will help them acquire the best skills and knowledge.

The college brought in learners from its practice school to participate in the initiative. Seasonal tutors at the college designed lessons based on what the basic school teachers were scheduled to teach on that day.

They then imparted these lessons to the basic learners under the observation of the teacher trainees. The trainees after observing these demonstration lessons were allowed to reflect on the experiences and shared their insights.

In an interaction with Coleman Publications, the STS coordinator, Mr Frempong Bans, stated that the workshop’s purpose was to bring the classrooms that trainees would be observing into the college so that tutors could teach the basic school learners for the trainees to see and develop proper reflection, observation and lesson delivery skills.

“The program serves as an opportunity for trainees to reflect with their tutors”, he elucidated.

Mr Bans emphasized that there can be no complete teacher education program unless it includes an effective STS program. Therefore, the College has put measures in place to ensure that its trainees grasp these concepts by the end of their 4-year B.Ed program.

Speaking to Coleman Publications, the Academic Prefect, Josiah Entsua-Mensah, praised the training program, stating that it was one of a kind, as most teachers on the field do not understand the STS program and so are unable to help them as needed.

However, he believes that the training has provided a better understanding as they were able to ask questions for clarification and what is expected from them was rightly demonstrated to them.

The Principal, Very Reverend Kwesi Nkum Wilson (PhD), along with the Head of Departments, lecturers, and many other college staff members, graced the event with their presence and provided support to ensure its success.

Varieties of lessons were also taught to ensure that trainees comprehensively understood how to effectively deliver their lessons.

The program provided a unique opportunity for trainees to observe, reflect and learn from experienced tutors, and it is hoped that this will translate into more effective teaching practices in the near future.
