Amidst the ongoing concerns surrounding the National Service registration of some Colleges of Education (CoE) graduates, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has stepped in to clarify the accreditation status of these institutions, directly contradicting earlier claims made by the National Service Authority (NSA).

Recently, the NSA released the National Service PIN codes for trained teachers from the various Colleges of Education to register for the 2025-2026 service year. However, a majority of these teachers faced challenges accessing their PIN codes.

The NSA, in a statement, revealed that these students were unable to commence their registration or access their PINs because the colleges they attended had expired accreditations that needed renewal.

This did not sit well with the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF). On February 27th, PRINCOF released a statement refuting the NSA’s assertions, stating, “The claim by the NSA that certain Colleges of Education lack accreditation or have expired accreditation is inaccurate.”

PRINCOF further clarified that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has renewed the accreditation of all Colleges of Education up to August 2028. Consequently, graduates from these colleges are eligible to register for their mandatory National Service without hindrance.

GTEC has now officially confirmed this position. In a letter dated February 28, 2025, addressed to the Director-General of the National Service Authority, GTEC stated,

“We write to formally inform you that the forty-six (46) Public Colleges of Education (CoE) have been duly re-accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).”

The letter, signed by Saaka Sayuti, Director of Corporate Affairs for the Director-General of GTEC, requested that the NSA recognize the Colleges of Education as accredited institutions for the duration of their accreditation.

“We kindly request that you recognize them as accredited institutions for the period of their accreditation,” the letter stated.

GTEC also encouraged the NSA to contact the Commission directly for any future inquiries about the accreditation status of institutions and their programs.

While the NSA has yet to publicly respond to GTEC’s letter or PRINCOF’s statement, GTEC’s intervention is expected to pave the way for the remaining Colleges of Education graduates to access their PINs and smoothly complete their National Service registration.
