Gov’t to improve accommodation and support for tertiary students

The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving the overall student experience in technical universities nationwide.

Speaking at the grand durbar to celebrate Bolgatanga Technical University’s 25th anniversary, the Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, on behalf of the sector minister, Haruna Iddrisu, outlined the comprehensive measures the government intends to implement.

“Recognising the importance of student welfare, this government is also committed to improving the overall student experience in technical universities,” Dr. Apaak stated.

“We understand that for students to excel, they must have access to affordable accommodation, reliable transportation, quality healthcare services, and financial aid programs,” he continued.

Key initiatives announced include:

  • No-Academic-Fee Policy (No-Fees-Stress Initiative): According to him, a significant allocation of GH¢499.8 million will cover academic fees for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions.
  • Enhanced Student Loan Scheme: He also noted that Improvements will be made to increase the accessibility and efficiency of student loan disbursement, aiming to prevent students from dropping out due to financial difficulties.
  • Improved Campus Infrastructure: Dr. Apaak mentioned that plans are underway to expand hostels, recreational facilities, and digital libraries to foster a more conducive learning environment.
  • Enhanced Internship and Job Placement Programs: He also disclosed that stronger connections with industry leaders will be established to facilitate a smoother transition from education to employment.
  • Mental Health and Counseling Services: The deputy minister added that the government will prioritize strengthening student support systems to provide guidance, career counselling, and mental health services to students in need.

Dr. Apaak also took the opportunity to commend the leadership of Bolgatanga Technical University, past and present, for their dedication and service to the institution.

He acknowledged the vital role of faculty and staff in shaping the next generation of professionals.

“Your efforts in shaping minds and nurturing talents will forever remain invaluable,” Dr. Apaak stated.

“To the faculty and staff, your commitment to excellence and mentorship is deeply appreciated. Your role in moulding the next generation of professionals is one that cannot be understated,” he concluded.
