The Education sector minister, Dr. Yaw Adutwum revealed during the National Education Week held in Accra that Ghana will commence an open university in the coming year, 2024.
The five-day event to discuss and suggest possible innovative ideas in the evolution of Ghana’s education service witnessed several scholars from both the academia and the corporate world as they shared insightful knowledge about the way forward for Ghana’s education.
In a speech delivered by the sector minister, he reiterated the government’s effort to make education accessible to all school-going ages and to bridge the class gap in the education sector.

This means, that both the privileged and the less privileged will have the same and equal share of quality education.
This according to the honorable minister will be achieved through the model change in the education sector whereby emphasis is placed on shifting from the existing notion of how a government schools are structured and curricular development.
The introduction of STEM education and revitalizing of TVET where students have access to modern facilities to learn and adopt new and innovative ways of providing solution to problems was a matter of concern during the week.
Dr. Yaw Adutwum further added that Ghana will begin an open university whereby students and tutors engage each other via the virtual space.
Students who enroll in the open university will only need internet connectivity to access classes. The open university concept is an advanced education model away from distance education.

“Open University is a system of education whereby students do not require a classroom to be educated. You can sit in the comfort of your home and take your courses online just like being done in Western countries”
“It is different from the distance education. For me, distance education is rather an education in distance whereby structures are put up for students but books to be read are sent online for students to access. It is not the same as an open university. The open university will have no physical classrooms for participants” he said.
