Approximately 24,000 teachers are expected to be recruited next academic year by the Ghana Education Service (GES) under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, the Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has disclosed.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has said it is increasingly difficult to get physics and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) subject teachers to teach students in various Senior High Schools in the country.
An official of the Education Ministry disclosed the current teacher recruitment situation in the various Senior High Schools (SHSs) speaking on the Accra-based Peace 104.3 FM’s Kokrokoo show monitored by Thisterm.com.

His revelation comes after the Ghana Education Service (GES) was accused of recruiting non-trained graduate teachers, a claim the Ministry of Education (MoE) official debunked saying “all graduates recruited are trained teachers”.
According to him government universities including the University of Education (UEW), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), University for Development Studies (UDS) train over 14,000 graduate teachers each year for employment.
“Despite all that, it is increasingly difficult to find physics and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) subject teachers to teach students in secondary schools in the country”, he told the host of the Kokrokoo show.
The staff of the Ministry in Charge of Education in the interview admitted the fact that the Ghana Education Service service in some circumstances recruits non-trained graduate teachers to fill vacancies for students to be taught.

In other news, the Ministry of Education says it is working on a placement system dubbed E-deployment for new teachers to select rural areas to be posted. The new system it said will come with incentives and other juicy packages.
“We will soon start what we call a teacher incentive program to ensure promotion and study leave of new teachers posted to rural places to are prioritised, we are working to make teaching attractive,” the Education Minister has said.
