The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cracked down on unauthorized Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration fees levied on final-year students by some basic school heads.
This follows widespread complaints circulating on social media alleging that students were being charged fees not sanctioned by the GES.
In a strongly worded statement released on February 12th, the GES management unequivocally condemned the practice and ordered all school heads involved to immediately cease collecting the unauthorized fees. The statement emphasized that no such charges have been approved by the service.
“Regional Directors are instructed to alert District Directors to monitor the situation and caution all Heads of Basic Schools,” the GES statement read. “Any Head who has collected such unauthorised fees is required to refund the monies promptly. Failure to comply will result in sanctions.”

The GES has further directed all affected school heads to make a full refund of the illegally collected fees. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.
The directive also served as a reminder to school heads regarding the importance of timely BECE registration.
The GES reiterated that late registrations will not be permitted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and urged all heads to ensure that eligible students are registered within the official registration period.
This move by the GES aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents and ensure equal opportunity for all students to participate in the crucial BECE examinations.
Parents are encouraged to report any suspected instances of unauthorized fee collection to the relevant District Education Office.
