Labour expert Austin Gamey has declared the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association (CETAG) as legal, calling on the government to implement the National Labour Commission’s ruling to address the grievances of striking members.

Speaking to TV3’s labour correspondent, Daniel Opoku, Mr. Gamey expressed concern over the government’s failure to comply with the Labour Commission’s directive.

“The workers are tired,” he stated, “and this is a legal strike. We expect the Commission to either enforce its ruling or direct the employer to implement the award.”

Mr. Gamey also dismissed claims that CETAG has taken an entrenched position, emphasizing that the association has patiently pursued negotiation with the government regarding their conditions of service.

“They went through the process of engaging their employer, reaching the Labour Commission, and participating in compulsory arbitration,” he explained, “to ensure that the order given by the Commission is implemented.”

Professor Atintono, President of Principals of Colleges of Education, has also expressed sadness over the impact of the strike on academic work. “

Just one week after reopening,” he revealed, “lectures are not happening, and students are only engaging in independent studies.”
