The Executive Director of the education think tank, Kofi Asare has called on the government to scrap the payment of teacher trainees’ allowances.
Speaking at a roundtable discussion organized by the Citizen’s Coalition in Accra on Thursday, December 15, 2022, the director asserted the payment of the allowance to trainees is a wasteful expenditure that the government must cease engaging in with immediate effect.
He believes if the government wants to attain its quest to cut down on expenditure as stated in the 2023 budget, then the teacher trainees’ monthly stipend is one of such he must do away with.
Kofi Asare added teacher trainees should be permitted to access student loans like any other tertiary students instead of the allowances which he believes has outlived its usefulness.
“I think the budget failed to appreciate that there is a certain wasteful expenditure that should the education space, especially teacher trainee allowances. The government has repeated that it intends to spend GH241 million in 2023 to feed adult trainees who are in tertiary education and have the right to access student loans just like other tertiary students”, he expressed.

This man is not serious and I believe he doesn’t know what he is saying. After eating, the only thing left is to speak nonsense that government should stop giving us Allowance. How many students in traditional universities in Ghana that have applied for that student loan and were given? And yet to add the Colleges of Education. Nonsense.
