The Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o has resigned as the President of the Cameroonian Football Association (Fecafoot), following the elimination of the national team from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, his resignation has been rejected by the Executive Committee members of Fecafoot.

Eto’o, who took charge of Fecafoot in December 2021, tendered his resignation letter after the Indomitable Lions lost to Nigeria in the last 16 stage of the AFCON tournament.

This decision comes after a series of controversial moments that have plagued Eto’o’s presidency over the past two and a half years.

During the AFCON competition, Cameroon struggled to progress beyond the group stages, narrowly defeating Gambia before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the round of 16.

Eto’o’s emotions were on full display, with the former striker shedding tears of joy when Cameroon advanced to the knockout stages.

However, the disappointment of their elimination took a toll on him.

In response to Eto’o’s resignation, Fecafoot issued a statement declaring that the Executive Committee had unanimously rejected his resignation.

The committee stated that they have decided to maintain their current mandates and continue their confidence in Eto’o to lead the reconstruction and development of Cameroon football, as outlined in his plan adopted by the General Assembly in December 2021.

Under Eto’o’s leadership, Cameroon failed to progress beyond the group stage in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and suffered an early exit in the AFCON 2023.

Despite the disappointment, the Executive Committee members believe in Eto’o’s ability to bring positive changes to Cameroonian football at all levels.
