The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has announced the suspension of its planned demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the prolonged withholding of student results.
The protest, initially scheduled for Tuesday, February 25th, 2025, has been put on hold following a commitment from WAEC to release all pending results by February 28th, 2025.
The decision came after an emergency meeting orchestrated by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davies, which brought together key figures from WAEC and NUGS.
Representing WAEC were Dr. (Mrs.) Rosemond Wilson, Head of WAEC Ghana, and Rev. Victor Brew, WAEC Head of Legal. NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchway, spearheaded the students’ union delegation.
“WAEC gave firm assurances that all pending withheld results would be released before March 1, 2025,” stated a released statement from NUGS. “In light of this commitment, NUGS has resolved to suspend the planned demonstration while monitoring WAEC’s adherence to the agreed timeline.”

Furthermore, the GES Director-General has invited NUGS to submit policy proposals on reforms regarding the handling of examination malpractice cases.
“This presents a crucial opportunity for NUGS to advocate for a fairer and more transparent process that prioritizes students’ rights and timely resolutions,” NUGS added.
NUGS also emphasized its dedication to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian students.

“NUGS remains resolute in its mission to protect the interests of Ghanaian students,” the statement read. “Should WAEC fail to meet the 28th February deadline, we will not hesitate to take further action in defence of affected students.”
