The President of The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), Prince Obeng Himah, has expressed his support for the Teacher Licensure Examination, stating that it is a good initiative and should not be cancelled.

This statement comes in response to former President, John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to abolish the teacher licensure examination if he is re-elected.

Mr. Mahama had questioned the necessity of the examination, arguing that students already write exams throughout their time in school and should not have to undergo another examination to begin teaching.

The Teacher Licensure Examination was introduced by the National Teaching Council (NTC) in 2018 with the aim of licensing teachers for public pre-tertiary schools in Ghana.

The Ministry of Education has stated that this initiative is in fulfilment of the Education Act, of 2008, which requires a program of study for pre-tertiary teachers leading to a license to teach.

In response to Mr. Mahama’s comments, CETAG President Prince Obeng Himah emphasized the importance of the examination, stating that it is a necessary step for students entering the teaching profession.

He also highlighted that CETAG had previously agreed on the implementation of entrance exams for students aspiring to become teachers.
