The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of candidates from 235 schools for engaging in collusion and using artificial intelligence to generate answers in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The council stated that the cases are currently under investigation, and the withheld results may be released or cancelled based on the outcome of the investigations.
Additionally, WAEC has blocked the results of 4,878 candidates for failing to return learning support materials supplied to them by their schools, and they are advised to contact their schools.

The 2023 WASSCE saw a total of 448,674 candidates from 975 schools, comprising 212,453 males and 236,221 females. This figure represents a 5.8% increase from the 2022 entry figure of 422,883.
Furthermore, 3,404 candidates (0.75%) were absent from the examination.

Moreover, WAEC revealed that it has cancelled the subject results of 3,647 candidates for bringing foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed material into the examination halls.
The entire results of 839 candidates were also cancelled for possession of mobile phones in the examination halls.
Additionally, the subject results of 4,280 candidates and the entire results of 1,005 have been withheld for various suspected offences, pending the outcome of investigations.

The council emphasized that these cases are still under investigation, and the withheld results may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations.
